Harvey Norman to support Rugby 1st SJRU Girls Academy

There has been plenty of movement in the Girls Rugby space over the past few years in all formats of the game.

We have seen State Championships and City vs Country events kick off for the Girls XV’s and at the same time SJRU has run Girls 7’s (Sizzling, Frosty and Spring) coupled with the NSWRU 7’s State Champs.

But probably the most exciting prospect of 2022 will be the creation of the Rugby 1st SJRU Girls Academy.

Supported by two wonderful sponsors in Rugby 1st and Harvey Norman, this Academy is aimed to create more opportunity for female youth to gain exposure to both 7’s & XV’s. The goal of this Academy is to develop & expand female youth with unique skills & knowledge of the game. From this we hope to encourage and empower female youth to consider and explore all pathway opportunities.

Furthermore, we would like to encourage local coaches to attend theses academies to be able to upskill themselves and have access to key pathway coaches.

“Rugby 1st is delighted to be partnering with NSW JRU and Rugby Australia to launch the inaugural Rugby 1st Girls Academy.  We see this as an exciting extension of our support over the last 3 years for the Rugby 1st NSW JRU Girls State Championships and particularly significant to our agenda as we get set to launch the Rugby 1st Women social platforms in a RWC year, re-structure our memberships post-Covid and move forward with new initiatives to support Rugby and the Vet Friendly Club program at grassroots.”  Alexandra Lyus – Director, Rugby 1st www.rugby1st.com

We have enlisted the assistance of coaches from Elite playing groups such as the Wallaroos, Super W Waratahs, Rugby Australia & NSWRU to guide these female youth through specific skill and concepts of the game to better develop and expand their understand along with building confidence.

We hope to reduce barriers for female youth and their families by ensuring there are no costs involved for them to participate in this academy across the 4-weeks. Whilst walking away with more knowledge and confidence we would also like to provide those who attend with Official Academy Training Kit.

NSW Rugby Stalwart Michael Doyle was quoted “This is the most exciting thing to happen to the girls game in recent history. Better than Christmas Day

The Program will be run over four weeks in May and will be open to all Sydney based girls and their coaches in the ages of U14s through to Under 18s (ie Born 2004-2008). Girls whom are 13 years old and playing in the SJRU XV’s wave may also be open for inclusion.

The Academy has already received glowing endorsements from Grace Hamilton, Sera Naiqama, Emily Chancellor & Waratahs Super W Head Coach Campbell Aitken. Check out our Facebook page to see these.
