Matt Evrard from NSW Rugby Education and Training, has developed weekly training sessions for players aged U6 to U18s, to assist all junior coaches. The programs are separated into age groups to assist with appropriate skills for player development.

Becoming a Coach

The ARU, in consultation with the state unions is responsible for course content and accreditation.

All SJRU coaches are encouraged to further their development by accessing the courses and resources offered by both NSWRU and the ARU. All coaches must be Smart Rugby Compliant as a minimum.


Coaching programs involve both Accreditation Courses and Certificate Courses.


Tailored training courses for coaches working with junior athletes specifically 6-12 year old athletes. Courses are underpinned by coaching fundamentals, understanding modified pathways, and safe practices. Smart Rugby is an online course and is an OH&S requirement. Accreditation lasts for two years.

There is no course for Level 1. Instead, the Smart Rugby Accreditation along with the recommended Foundation Certificate course needs to be completed prior to applying to be assessed as a Level 1 coach.

Tailored education for coaches working with young adults in participation environments. Representative team Coaches must have this Level 2 Qualification. Once you have met all the prerequisites, the development course includes assessment as a Level 2 coach.

Tailored to Performance Coaches across a variety of contexts. Coaches in these programs are seen as ‘Coaches of Talent’ with potential to coach at an elite Level.Once you have met all the prerequisites, the performance course includes assessment as a Level 3 coach.


Tailored youth courses that are specific to entry level coaches working with 13 – 18 year old athletes. Courses focus on developing safe practice, skill development and sound coaching behaviours.

Two courses are offered appropriate to different age groups, offering a fresh and exciting introduction to the modified games of the Kids Pathway.

  • Coaching Kids U6 and U7 Rugby
  • Coaching Kids U8 to U12 Rugby

This course covers the beginner coaching requirements of a Sevens Rugby coach and as such will incorporate SmartRugby principles throughout. Course participants are likely to be varied and could include teachers, parents and players. Experience levels will also be varied, ranging from novices to experienced 15-a-side coaches.

The senior sevens course is designed for coaches who are coaching sevens across a variety of platforms. This course is designed to develop sevens coaching application, knowledge and laws of the game.


NSW Rugby staff are running special WOMENS ONLY Foundation Courses for those interested in gaining Coach or Match Official accreditation.



Accreditation courses are registered with the Australian Sports Commission and coaches have a ‘licence’ for four years, with the exception of Smart Rugby which is for two years. After that time, the coach must either re-accredit or complete a higher level of coaching accreditation.

NSW Rugby Union run numerous courses during the year at major venues with professionally trained staff.
