2016 RIO OLYMPICS: Rugby 7s

In 2016, Rugby 7s was played at the Olympics for the first time.

The Australian Women’s team, won the gold medal while the Australian Men’s 7s team also put in a commendable performance. Their combined success at international level has increased interest and participation in Rugby 7s.

ABOUT RUGBY 7s

Rugby 7s is a unique, faster, modified 15s rugby game that allows for a quick outcome finishing in just 14 minutes of play. Sydney Rugby Union has seen the number of players enjoying this game sky rocket in the last few years. The game originated in Scotland in 1883 and is now an Olympic sport, played in many countries around the world.

As the name implies, there are only 7 players per team on the field at any one time. The game is fast and exciting and played by all ages and abilities.

Following a series of ad hoc competitions run in conjunction with NSWRU Development staff in 2016, the decision has been made to run a competition in 2017 for both Girls and Boys in the U10s through to U18s age groups.
